On Truth

Category : Officer's Tactical Studies by Topic:R-Z

It’s often said the only sure things in life are death and taxes; and the two things that you should never discuss in public are politics and religion. I don’t think I like that last one…

Most of us are longing for a sure thing in life; something we can “take to the bank.” We’re looking for some “cosmic truth” that applies to everyone at all times under all circumstances. Not like how the law seems to be applied in so many of our criminal cases! No double standards. No tricks, loopholes, or plea bargains. No maybes. Just the straight-up truth! Anything short of this kind of truth is just someone’s opinion. In fact, when you take away God’s Word, that’s all you have left.

Here It Is

God’s Word, the Holy Bible is the source of Truth that transcends cultures, belief systems, and racial groups; the true source of everlasting wisdom and justice that supercedes the highest human judge or court. It is intensely applicable to all people in all situations at all times. It is more up-to-date and cutting-edge than tomorrow’s newsaper headlines. It never changes.

“For the word of God is quick [alive], and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”Hebrews 4:12

You probably have a Bible in your home, but you may have dismissed it as just a book of incoherent writings of some ancient desert nomads. To some it may be a source of warm, fuzzy emotional feelings that take them back to a time in their lives when they were little and went to Sunday School with Grandma. Maybe you claim to follow it (when it is convenient for you), but when life gets “real,” you have no time for it because it’s really just for doing the church thing on Sundays.

Maybe you have rejected it and you view Christians today as right-wing fanatic types. Maybe you have “tried religion” to see if it works and you feel God has let you down somehow. Maybe that’s your take on God’s Word.

What’s Your Reason?

If the truth were known, those who have rejected God’s Word have done so for one or more of the following reasons:

1. They have not read the Bible for themselves and are totally ignorant about what it actually says. Many have depended upon a church or a denomination to tell them what it says, but they have seen the personal hypocrisy in the lives of some who have claimed to follow it, so they reject it.

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.”Matthew 22:29

2. They have been told that it contradicts itself all over the place, but because they have never read it themselves they can’t really tell you where or how it supposedly does this; but, hey, that’s a good enough excuse to not believe it, right?

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:2 Timothy 3:16

3. They are afraid to read what God’s Word says because they know in their hearts that t will expose their personal sin and will hold them accountable to God.

“What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.” -Romans 7:7

4. It makes no sense to them.

“But the natural man [an unsaved individual] receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” – 1 Corinthians 2:14

Most people have “Burger King Faith.” They want to have Jesus their way and not be told we must come to Him on His terms, not on our own terms. God’s Word reveals the error of our personal opinions, pride, selfishness, and greed. It reveals the Truth about the hopeless condition of our wicked hearts and our desperate need of the Saviour.

Truth defines the way things really are. And anyone who disagrees with the Truth is the one who is wrong.

Now Hold On! Back That Truck Up!

Does it offend you when someone tells you that not all paths lead to God, or that Jesus is the only way?

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” – John 14:6

Does the whole story of Jesus dying on the cross to pay your personal debt of sin seem ridiculous to you? Do you consider yourself to be above all that religious foolishness?

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” -1 Corinthians 1:18

But I do Believe; I’m Just Not a Fanatic About It:

Why is it that people aren’t considered “fanatic” when they hoot and holler and wear large chunks of fake cheese on their heads and paint their faces green and yellow (or purple and gold) as they watch a bunch of grown men throw a piece of pig skin back and forth across a field? Why can someone memorize every statistic about each player in his favorite sports league and not be called “fanatic?”

And, of course, it’s certainly not fanatical when someone goes into withdrawals if they miss one episode of “The Days of the Lives of All My Young and Restless, Bold and Beautiful Generally-Hospitalized Beverly Hills Children.” Nor are those who hang upon every word of some movie-star-turned-TV-philosopher named after a backwards Marx Brother!

But if a guy simply takes a few moments each day to read the Word of God and pray and actually apply Its Truth to his life to make him a more honest, decent, responsible, self-controlled, wise and kind person, then for sure he’s somehow a fanatic!

Worry-Free Religion?

Some people think you live, you die, you go into the ground and that’s the end of it. They call it “worry-free religion.” That’s fine- if they are right! But if they are wrong and the Bible is right, they have a lot to worry about. And the consequences for being wrong about this last forever.

My friend, you are completely free to believe what you want to believe; but when it’s all said and done you will be held accountable for what God has written in His Word. There will be no excuses. The death rate among humans is still one per person.

Are you ready to face eternity? Will you be found on the side of Truth or error? In praying to His Heavenly Father, Jesus prayed this for us:

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” – John 17:17

Why don’t you change your mind about God’s Truth and trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour today?

1. Purposefully change your mind about your sin and realize your urgent need of His forgiveness. Turn to the Lord Jesus Christ for His mercy and forgiveness. This is called repentance.

2. Believe in your heart that Christ died on the cross and paid the full and complete debt for your sins; also that He rose again on the third day conquering death and sin for you so that you could have His lasting Peace and eternal life with Him in Heaven!

3. Confess with your mouth in prayer to God that you agree with Him and believe His Truth Surrender fully and make Him your own personal Lord and Saviour!

4. By faith, claim His mercy and forgiveness and receive His Peace! This is how to be born again. Jesus
said:

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:3
